San Juan Islands

Cindy Bernert-Coppola and I are continuing to plan a San Juan Island trip this August 15-19. With Covid-19 numbers still unstable, who knows what the future will bring?

We remain optimistic and flexible. Right now, our objective is just to let people know that we are going to organize rides and you are welcome to join us.

Typically, these rides have been group/semi-group as riders make choices independently on each island to stop at some locations for more sightseeing or to pedal on to the next viewpoint. So, the rides tend to naturally split into a kind of leapfrogging of our friends and then a rejoining and then another splintering. I anticipate that occurring again which will naturally provide some physical distancing.

We will just try to make it work within whatever protocols are in place at the time. That is why I am encouraging you to find accommodations that suit you and not try to cluster around one particular campsite at Lakedale Resort. The ferry rides and the pre-boarding line-ups for the ferry rides will bring us together.

I hope you all consider this option as it affords some beautiful riding. I just want to suggest that it may be a little different this year for obvious reasons, but those differences should not dampen your enthusiasm.

The general plan is to catch the 2:00 PM ferry from Anacortes to Friday Harbor on Sunday, August 15. Monday, August 16, we will ride around San Juan Island. Tuesday (August 17) we’ll head to Orcas Island. Wednesday (August 18) we’ll visit Lopez Island. Thursday (August 19), we head back to the lovely Rose City.

Obviously, you can make this trip what you want. Arrive sooner, stay longer. Skip riding one day and kayak or hike or just do what YOU want to do. Cindy and I have both ridden the islands before and will share our insights and facilitate your adventure.

Let us know if you are coming so we can keep you informed.

Looking forward to this summer adventure with my cycling friends.
