Reach the Beach Afterglow -Portland Bicycling Club

Reach the Beach Afterglow

We had 18 on our remarkable team this year and raised $7,624 for the American Lung Association. That put our team comfortably in the #4 spot on their Top Teams leaderboard. Ten riders from our team completed the 100-mile route, two rode the 77-mile route, two did the 27-mile route, and four chose the virtual option called Ride Your Way. We were all happy just to be able to participate in the ride this year! Modifications for the pandemic included not riding in Tillamook County, which meant not actually reaching the beach. Instead, new, one-time routes were created to allow us to ride safely in Washington County, keeping the COVID-19 risk lower to participants and volunteers.

A special shoutout to new PBC members Mark Detrick and Abhay Ambadkar, who joined the club just this year and participated in Reach the Beach for the first time; and to Mike Heffernan and Mark Linehan, who have been with the club for a few years but were new to RTB this year.  ✎  New member Abhay expressed his experience of doing the RTB 2021 this way: “I enjoyed doing the RTB 2021 event. It was my first Century, so it was extra special! And BIG thanks to PBC for their excellent training rides and ride leaders/members for encouragement and support. So glad to be a member and get to know all these amazing riders. Looking forward to many more miles with this club.”

Thank you to everyone on the team, as well as to those who supported the team with donations. Thank you for participating in the ride, for raising funds for the American Lung Association, and for being flexible with the route changes this year. Thank you, all, for making it fun and successful! Now, what about next year? Sand… water… the BEACH!  😊
