Your Club at Work

PBC MERCH: Be sure and keep an eye on the club store. We have T-shirts (limited sizing) and may soon have some jerseys. A jersey order is developing, and we will order a few extra to meet the minimum order    requirements. Also, right now the “store” is where you register for the banquet!

EVENT RIDES APPROVED FOR CLUB MILEAGE: To encourage our members to venture out to other events the board has agreed to allow PBC members to earn club miles on certain rides. Those certain rides will be    decided at the February 21 board meeting. We know that some of you won’t mount that machine of yours if you aren’t going to see your PBC mileage stats increase. To have a non-club ride approved for club mileage, it needs a ride leader to take on the responsibility of getting it posted on our ride calendar. You know how this works: if it’s not on the PBC calendar, there is no club mileage. Period. Then, as ride leader, you need to gather all the rider information and turn in the mileage. So, think about some of your favorite rides in the past, look them up online, gather a little information, and submit it to a board member before February 21 so we can approve it. We’ve been limiting it to ten per year. Monster Cookie, The Gorge Ride and Ride Around Clark County are examples. Here is the policy: https://portlandbicyclingclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Non-Club-Event-rides-for-Club-mileage.pdf

NO FEBRUARY CLUB MEETING: Just a quick reminder that there is a JANUARY club meeting on the 4th. On February 1st, when we would typically have a club meeting, we are having our club banquet. Please come! Information elsewhere in the Quick Releases.

CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS: The PBC board met on December 20. A part of the meeting was focused on the club’s proposed 2024 budget and a determined amount of discretionary funds that would be    reasonable to give away as charitable donations. Treasurer Corey Eng led this part of the discussion. The board then reviewed the 2022 donations and ultimately determined to replicate that list and the dollar amounts in 2023. That list is as follows:

Please remember that YOU, our membership, raised the money that we are now able to generously share with our cycling community. It was YOU who volunteered at Pioneer Century and Seattle to Portland. Those activities and your hard work EARNED the funds to enable us invest in others. Please, please, please enjoy this feeling of sharing, helping, altruism, philanthropism – all made possible because of YOU. Appreciate this feeling. I know many of you felt EXHAUSTED at times because of the efforts you invested in our fund raising activities. Now enjoy the fruits of that labor.

Cheers and thank you.

REACH THE BEACH: A longtime favorite ride is Reach the Beach. Last year those of us who participated in this charity ride were treated to new routes to the beach. And the new routes led to a new beach! Comments were favorable    except for maybe that darned coastal breeze pushing against the chest at the end! Dick Weber was the lead of our training ride series for many years recently, trotting out a succession of rides starting in winter and leading up to the May Reach the Beach charity ride. The rides start shorter and easier and soon develop into longer and more difficult rides to prepare not only club members but anyone interested in riding Reach the Beach for the event itself. We work with American Lung Association and they try to direct their riders to us for the help they need.

Mark Detrick, who has only just fought his way back onto his bike after a medical emergency earlier in the year, has graciously stepped in to run this series. Cary Fisher will Co-lead.

Note that participants in these rides need not be planning to do Reach the Beach. These are club rides and anyone can join. We encourage you to venture out on these and help those who are less skilled or able. Additionally, this series can serve you as trainers for ANY ride you have coming up in 2024. They are not exclusive to RtB.

A big THANK YOU to Mark and Cary for taking this on. It’s a long tradition and can really serve as an introduction to our club and what we have to offer.

2024 PBC EXECUTIVE BOARD: Our December club meeting included our annual elections and we have a complete board with some    new faces:

Note that Road Captain Rob Schroeder and Members at Large Gary Lunsford and Maria Sworske are also board members but elected for term July through June.
