Leif Erickson / Saltzman / Skyline Gravel Ride

Description

This short & scenic loop climbs from NW Portland into Forest Park. The first half includes about 1,300’ of sustained climbing, with much of it (about 9 miles) on gravel roads: Leif Erickson Drive & Saltzman. Best to use a mountain, gravel, or hybrid bike – road bikes with skinny tires (< 32 mm) are not recommended. The pavement resumes at Skyline Blvd where we turn left and eventually descend on Thompson & Cornell Roads back into NW Portland. Safety Notes: Leif Erickson & Saltzman are narrow with many blind corners and a lot of bike & pedestrian traffic. Plan to ride single file most of the time and be sure to stay to the right going around corners. Coffee stop is at St Honore in NW Portland near end of ride. Sign-in will be with the ride leaders at the start.
