Klickitat Trail Gravel Ride -Portland Bicycling Club

Klickitat Trail Gravel Ride

Description

OVERVIEW
We have to drive all the way to Lyle WA for this ride but this is one heck of a fun ride. This is a five star route courtesy of our gravel riding friends at Dirty Freehub (https://dirtyfreehub.org/adventure/washington-gravel/klickitat-trail/ ). IMO, this is one of the premier routes in the PNW.

This ride starts out with about 10 miles of steady climbing on the roads. But at that point we make two transitions: we switch to gravel and we have a gentle downhill as we ride along the Klickitat trail. This trail is an old railroad line and is remote, scenic and bumpy. For this ride, I’d go with as large of tires as you can. I used 40mm and was fine - but wouldn’t complain if I had wider.

After about 3/4ths of the way we reach the town of Klickitat. We’ll stop there for some lunch. Hopefully a cafe if we can find one open but if not at least stop at a market.

Departure Time: 9:30 am at Lyle or 8AM at Columbia Gorge Outlet Mall

Elevation gain: 2,600 feet of climbing.
Water and Lunch: Yes at mile 30 at Klickitat

BICYCLE RECOMMENDATIONS
You do need a real gravel bike or mtn bike for this ride. The surface is quite bumpy. I’d recommend 40mm wide tires or wider.

CARPOOL
There are two start options for this tour. I’ll bring my bicycle rack (which can hold 3 bikes). If others do the same then we can carpool part of the way. To carpool meet at 8AM at Columbia Gorge Outlet mall (exit 17 from HWY 84).

Otherwise, we will meet at the Klickitat trailhead in Lyle, WA. Which is just off 142 as you approach Lyle. Bathrooms are available there. It is about 1 hour 20 minute drive to the trailhead. You’ll need to pay $2 toll for each way on the bridge in Hood River.

Please read the Covid protocols before attending the ride.
