Hillbilly Weather Station – Gravel -Portland Bicycling Club

Hillbilly Weather Station – Gravel

This ride has been canceled!

Description

OVERVIEW
Once again we drive out to Lyle WA to ride another Dirty Freehub five star route. This time it is Hillbilly Weather station. (https://dirtyfreehub.org/adventure/washington-gravel/hillbilly-weather/) . I’ve modified their route remove the out-and-back and make it a little shorter. I haven’t done this ride before myself but many of my friends raved about it so I’m ready to give it a shot.

Departure Time: 9:15 am at Lyle or 8AM at Columbia Gorge Outlet Mall
Distance/Elevation: 35.3 miles, 3,500 feet of climbing.
Water and Lunch: None

MAPS
For much of this ride we are in a network of unmarked, gravel roads. Paper maps and cue sheets will NOT work and will not be provided. I encourage everyone to use the RideWithGPS on your smart phone for directions while riding. (Note that the free version of RideWithGPS is adequate for PBC rides.) Provided you don’t ride off ahead of the group, I’ll make sure no one gets lost.

BICYCLE RECOMMENDATIONS
This route rides really well on a gravel / CX bike with tires 35 to 40 mm..

CARPOOL
There are two start options for this tour. I’ll bring my bicycle rack (which can hold 3 bikes). If others do the same then we can carpool part of the way. To carpool meet at 8AM at Columbia Gorge Outlet mall (exit 17 from HWY 84).

Otherwise, we will meet at the Klickitat trailhead in Lyle, WA. Which is just off 142 as you approach Lyle. Bathrooms are available there. It is about 1 hour 20 minute drive to the trailhead. You’ll need to pay $2 toll for each way on the bridge in Hood River.

Please read the Covid protocols before attending the ride.
