Eagle Cap 6 – Day Loaded Tour – Day 1 La Grande to Minam State Recreation Area and Trip Overview

Mileage is not exact, as RwGPS will not permit route marking as far as the campground. Day one actual mileage is approximately 40 miles.

A 6-day loaded tour around the Eagle Cap beginning Sunday, August 21. Tour total is about 250 miles.
Preliminary itinerary is:
Day 1     Drive to La Grande, park the car at Western Oregon University (I have cleared this with campus security, and they have a free lot), then ride to Minam State Park.
Day 2     Ride to Wallowa Lake State Park.
Day 3     Ride to Ollokot Forest Camp`(Hardest day—3200’ total elevation gain, 9% grades. 3600’ total descent).
Day 4     Ride to Hewitt Park (near Richland, OR), lunch at Wild Bill’s in Halfway.
Day 5     Ride to Catherine Creek State Park.
Day 6     Ride to La Grande, Drive home.
Could lay over 1 day in Island City or La Grande to freshen up!

Pace: Whatever suits you. Probably average 8-10 mph for the day

Food is available from grocery stores or restaurants in La Grande, Island City, and Elgin.

Easy rolling terrain for 20 miles, then a long (8.6 mi) steep (1,400’ elev. gain) climb after Elgin followed by a very steep 5 mile descent to the Minam River and the turnoff to Minam State Recreation Area.
