Crown Zellerbach Trail – Gravel

Description

Please read the Covid protocols before attending the ride.

This is one of a series of introductory gravel rides. If you have fitness but are new to gravel, then this might be a good ride for you. At 43 miles and 2,800 feet of climbing, this ride may appear somewhat daunting, but we’ll make a day of this ride with a lunch break in Vernonia.

We’ll skip the boring first few miles of CZ and start at the base of the first climb. It is a nice gravel path all the way to about mile 15. At that point we cross the road and ride on the less developed section of CZ. There is a big climb and then … the trail falls part. The trail has baseball size rocks and unless you have 70 mm wide tires, you’ll be walking for a bit. After that though we hit roads and drop into Vernonia for lunch at the Black Iron Grill. Water is available in Vernonia.

We will bypass the crazy gravel section on the way back and stay on the road all the way until the top of the climb. From there we zoom back to the start on the fun gravel path we rode up on.

Gravel Bike:
You do need a real gravel bike or mtn bike for this ride, barely. Much of the trail is well packed gravel. I ride with 40 mm wide tires but you could probably ride 35 mm on this tour (well except for the bad part where we’ll walk).
