NEW ROUTE – Two County Explorer -Portland Bicycling Club

NEW ROUTE – Two County Explorer

Description

This ride starts and ends in the lovely town of Rainier, Oregon (Columbia County). The first adventure is crossing the Columbia river on the Lewis and Clark bridge into the town of Longview (Whakiakum County). From there we proceed west along Highway 4 adjacent to the Columbia and traverse Cape Horn (yes, there are 2 of them) to Cathlamet, Washington. A short trip along some wetlands takes us to the small town of Skamokowa (the town that time forgot) across from the Lewis and Clark Wildlife Refuge and lunch at the local mercantile. We'll head back to Cathlamet through the Julia Hansen Columbia White Tailed Deer Refuge. The next adventure is crossing the Puget Islands in the Columbia and taking the last operating ferry on the Columbia river to Westport, Oregon. From there we'll ride on Highway 30 to Clatskanie and then ride on the old Highway 30 (Beaver Falls Road) back to Rainier. Travel time from Portland to Rainier is 90 minutes on
Highway 30.
