Safety: Reporting Road Hazards

On one of the club’s Taco Tuesday rides, new member Jason Blasingame pointed out a damaged, and extremely hazardous, drain cover over a catch basin at the intersection of SE 112th Avenue and SE Powell Blvd. The grating is exactly in the path bicyclists follow when crossing Powell on southbound 112th in the bike lane. As you can see from the photo, the drain can easily swallow a road bike tire.   If a rider were to hit that at speed (say, while trying to make the stoplight there), the rider would certainly go down and the front wheel likely would be damaged or destroyed. I reported this situation to PBOT on November 17. On November 23, when we rode through that same intersection, the drain cover had been replaced. Message? Please observe and convey information! For the safety of all, it’s worth it to report road hazards.
