Member Profile: Dave McQuery

Since joining the Portland Wheelmen in 1999, except for a brief period, I have been an active member. I have participated in various events (e.g., Spring Century, Pioneer Century™, STP) both as a rider and as a volunteer. I have ridden over 3,000 club miles this year.

I have been leading rides for a few years, too. Most notably, I began leading the Jim O’Horo Memorial Columbia Gorge Explorer after the death of its founder and a couple of other leaders had been unable to continue. The ride has been on pause for a couple of years due to Covid-19 concerns, but I hope to resurrect it for 2022. I have been active in other ways, too.

  • I am a longstanding member of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (now The Street Trust).
  • I have also been part of identifying hazards to cyclists and working for solutions. For instance, I was able to show the City of Gresham that there was an obstacle for riders and others at the MAX station near Civic Drive due to recent nearby construction. The city got the contractor to put in a temporary ramp from the bike path through the MAX station.
  • Last year I was able to track down the agency responsible for maintaining the bike path along Marine Drive between NE 33rd and the Gleason Memorial Boat Ramp. We were able to get PBOT to trim back the blackberries. Now I am working with PBOT to get them cut back again.
  • I have established a contact with the Bicycle Coordinator at PBOT to ameliorate other hazards.
  • I have been aware of hazards and inconveniences (e.g., Springwater Corridor Trail closures) and communicated them to the road captains.

As noted above I am active and out and about with a variety of club members. This will serve me well as the “eyes and ears” of the club, one of the key components of being a member at large. I look forward to hearing your questions and concerns for the board and being your advocate. You may contact me at [email protected].
