Thank You, STP Volunteers!

I’m so proud of all our volunteers! Who were they? We had a nice mix of long-term members and new members. For a significant number of them, it was their first STP as volunteers – even our Finish Line Coordinator, Richard Rosenberg (2019); and team leaders: Dionne Philipp (2020), Sunday Return Bus; and Glenice Naslund (2023), Sunday Bike Corral; and Blair O’Malley (2024), Bike Loading, & wife Junko O’Malley. Special thanks to our new, first-year-volunteer team leaders!

Of our STP volunteers, our biggest group of 29% was members who joined PBC in the 2020s, and 4% of those became members just this year. Another 29% became club members in the previous decade of the 2010s. The next highest group was members who joined in the 2000s, with 15%. Those who joined in the 1990s contributed 12% of our volunteers. And there was another 12% of volunteers consisting of non-members; some were spouses, partners, colleagues of members; some were former club members; and one was a former STP rider not associated with our club, yet, who just wanted to give back. Then, there was 1% from the 1980s and 1% from the 1970s.

Thank you to our team leaders, Ann Morrow (1992), Info/Volunteer Booth; Dick Weber (1992), Finish Line Setup/Breakdown; Joel Loh (1993), Saturday Return Bus; Scott Poindexter (1996), Baggage; Chip Kyle (2008), Finish Line Safety; Kurt Minges (2009), Finish Line Safety; Kathleen Hellem (2012) Emcee; Dan Larkins (2021), Bike Corral; Todd Miller (2022), Storage Unit and Supply Rustling; Jason Olney (2023), Bike Corral, & wife Lisa Olney (2023); and Peter Kokopeli (2023), Finish Line Setup/Breakdown.

We had a small number of members who filled big roles volunteering and then rode the STP too! A huge thank you to Dave McQuery (1999), Friday Transportation (bike loading on trucks and passenger loading on buses) Team Leader who also co-piloted a truck on Friday and then pedaled his way back to Portland on Saturday and Sunday! On Monday, he then returned to retrieve and collect signs that had been marking the route. Thank you also to Kim Allen (2021), Friday Truck Driver who then rode the STP; Eric Hendricks (2015), Friday Truck Copilot who then rode the STP; Michael Schulte (2023), Friday Truck Driver who then rode the STP; and Charla Burke (2025), Friday Truck Copilot who then rode the STP.
