Banks-Vernonia State Trail

Our club has been hard at work on the Banks-Vernonia Trail this summer. PBC has had a couple of work parties a month out fixing potholes in the trail. We have, in partnership with the Stub Stewart park rangers, patched more than a dozen nasty potholes, and our club’s donation of $5,000 last spring has paid for the repair of two of the bridges on the trail. Repairs on one are complete, and the other with similar problems near Banks is slated for repair later this year, again, as part of our donation. Jeremy Williams (park ranger at the L. L. Stub Stewart Memorial State Park) has informed me that our club has provided 62 volunteer hours for maintenance of the trail. We have already been getting a lot of compliments and comments about the BV repair work! Thanks for your help and your $$$$ to make these repairs possible!

Let’s do Wednesday, August 9, and Wednesday, August 23, for this month. Contact me at 503-720-4946 or [email protected] if you’re interested in helping out or if you have any questions about the work.

The bridge in this photo on the Banks-Vernonia Trail was notorious. Not only was there a pothole about 2 feet wide and 4 inches deep right in the middle of the approach to the bridge, the bridge deck itself was about 4 inches higher than the trail on both ends. A rider who didn’t know about this ahead of time was in for a couple of NASTY surprises. Thanks to our club’s donation of $5,000 to the Friends of the Banks-Vernonia Trail, both approaches to this bridge have been smoothed out and the pothole filled.
