Summer Riding: Hub & Horizons

I am planning some summer hub-and-spoke club rides and wanted to give you an opportunity to save some dates if you want to join me on a mini-cycling-vacation with daily rides.
A hub‑and‑spoke ride is a multi‑day cycling getaway where we stay in one central location (the hub) and ride a different route each day (the spokes) exploring new horizons. Unlike a traditional tour, we don’t move our lodging each night. Each morning we start from the same base, and each day’s ride is its own adventure. It’s a relaxed, flexible way to enjoy a region without packing up every day.
These rides aren’t on our ride calendar yet, but in the meantime, I wanted to let you know what I am plotting.
Central Oregon. I am looking at three days of three rides: July 17, 18 and 19. So the weekend AFTER Seattle to Portland and the weekend BEFORE Ride Around Clark County. ✎
- Day 1 Crooked River out of Prineville as Bud has done, about 41 miles.
- Day 2 Sun River to Twin Lakes and back, about 48 miles.
- Day 3 Ride around Bend maybe including slogging up Pilot Butte, about 20 miles. I plan to motel, but you can camp or whatever suits you.
- San Juan Islands. September 9, 10 and 11. Obviously after Labor Day and people are back to their routines, but it’s still summer. Lakedale Resort, where we have stayed before, no longer has the big fields to camp in. I will reserve “family campsites” which hold eight people. They can be side by side, and I will reserve as needed. Please let me know ASAP, so I can accommodate all who are interested. Then you will pay me your share. Of course, you can rent your own space at Lakedale or book a room at their lodge or a yurt or whatever. Or stay in Friday Harbor. I am going to start by reserving one Family Campsite for eight people. We can have some people leave their cars in Anacortes and help pay for drivers to carry other people’s gear on the ferry. The Family Campsites only accommodate two vehicles.
Day 1 ride around San Juan Island.- Day 2 Lopez Island.
- Day 3 Orcas Island. (Day 2 and Day 3 might be reversed.)
These are rides that you can do on your own or with friends. I will provide maps and some information, or you can hang with me, the person who always misses the lavender farm and the lavender ice cream on San Juan Island. Note that you will need a full day for travel each way, so the dates listed are ONLY the riding days.
More information later, but I am excited and hope some of you will share these summer adventures with me.
Let me know about the family camping, so I can reserve sufficient space. [email protected] or 360-608-3173.
