June 2025 Top Talk

June! PIONEER CENTURY® (on the 7th)! I am pleased to inform you that preparations are coming along, and despite one of our event coordinators suffering a serious injury (Cindy Bernert-Coppola), she is able to tap those keys on her keyboard, create Zoom meetings, and use that phone to organize and coordinate. We have a fantastic team working on various aspects of the event, all diligent and hard-working. It’s been very encouraging to watch this all come together. Let’s do our best on event day but have fun whether riding or volunteering.
July 12 and 13 is the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic. All PBC has to do is coordinate the Finish Line at Holladay Park! Joking aside, it’s a big weekend with many volunteers working at least four days – not to mention all the preparations. ✎
Yes, on Saturday, July 12, approximately 6,000 cyclists will leave the University of Washington and start pedaling our way. Gulp! We’d better get ready! The extra speedy, or earliest risers, of about 1,500 one-day riders will start showing up in the early afternoon. We’ll rest overnight and return on Sunday, July 13, to welcome the two-day riders, about 4,500 of them, as they roll through the finish line on the second day. Then, we clean up our mess! It wasn’t a good party if there wasn’t a mess.
These two events, as has been said many times, are the two major streams of revenue for PBC. We do receive money from each club member for membership fees, but unfortunately, that alone does not cover our costs.
The Pioneer and the STP help PBC to have a fun and active club and enable us to share with our community to help a wide variety of cycling organizations. Please read the YOUR CLUB AT WORK feature in the June QR for yet another way we, PBC, are able to help promote cycling in the Portland Metro area.
Thank you for volunteering!
Ann Morrow, President
