July 2023 Top Talk

The Pioneer Century® was a success, with over 300 riders! It was a beautiful day biking through the rolling roads of Canby, including climbing the challenging and rewarding Sawtell hill.

Many thanks to our sponsors: Columbia Distributing, Charlie’s Produce, Dave’s Killer Bread, Lakeside Bicycles, and Classic Cycle. Deep gratitude to the Pioneer committee: Alan Mevis, Dave McQuery, Doug Myers, Richard Higgins, and Rob Schroeder. Much appreciation to all the volunteers! The stops had wonderful food, some of the best I’ve had at a sponsored ride.

In the spirit of sharing and minimizing waste, PBC made special donations of remaining food items that were not consumed at the rest stops. These edible food donations helped segments of our community who need support. We were thrilled to have Transition Projects and SnowCap Community Charities accept our donations and put them to good use.

Special kudos to the clean-up crews and the live bands. PBC members Pete & Elaine Schmidt and friends entertained us at the Elliott Prairie rest stop, and Lynn & Dave Blanchard and friends as we crossed the finish line.

In true pioneer-loving fashion, a group of riders witnessed a calf being born and taking its first steps. He may be our new mascot! We have unofficially named him Pioneer.

The Seattle to Portland bike ride is coming soon! Since we are an integral part of the STP Finish Line, please be sure to sign up to volunteer. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities to choose from. It is exciting to cheer folks on as they finish the adventure and to provide support for the riders.

Looking forward to seeing you on the road! “Take life by the handlebars!”®
