February 2025 Top Talk

We’re rolling into a new year and no doubt looking for warmer and drier riding weather as the seasons change. Here is what’s on my calendar:

February 6: Not much riding but the annual celebration at our BANQUET of the past year’s accomplishments, both cycling and volunteer efforts on behalf of our club. It’s a fun evening and always a kick to see our fellow cyclists without a helmet, bicycle, or tightly wrapped in spandex and Lycra. This event is truly to celebrate us, the members of PBC, and the fun and hard work of the past year.

June 7: PIONEER CENTURY®, our own event to flaunt our skills at laying out awesome cycling routes, superior rest stop provisions, and praiseworthy support in every way. We invite our friends who also enjoy road bike riding to come out to share in the joy of riding in beautiful Mt. Hood Territory. Two years ago, we even arranged for a calf to be born along the route to really emphasize the bucolic element of the course. This is our showcase, our chance to shine. Please volunteer to help if you aren’t riding the ride.

July 12-13: SEATTLE TO PORTLAND BICYCLE CLASSIC, our event in cooperation with Cascade Bicycle Club from Seattle to manage the Finish Line in Portland for about 5,000 riders coming into our lovely city after starting their ride in Seattle. It’s actually a four-day event…with setup, breakdown and buses to Seattle. Many volunteers are needed to welcome our fellow cyclists into town and help them celebrate a huge accomplishment. Please volunteer to help if you aren’t riding the ride.

August 3: The last shindig is our annual PICNIC to celebrate the riding and camaraderie of summer riding. The club pays for the picnic site and the entrée, and we all bring potluck (which is always delicious). We have a few rides before we eat and some raffle prizes.

The above is us. This is what our bike club has done each year for decades. It’s part of what makes us a CLUB and not just a MeetUp group. We do things. We raise money. We give back to our community. We are able to do this because YOU, the members, volunteer. Without volunteers, the above activities would come to an end.
