April 2025 Top Talk

I feel as if we are really having to fight our way out of winter this year, although there have been some decent riding days in which the weather forecaster wasn’t quite correct, and we squeaked in a ride before the rain.

April, spring, brings us the first of several event rides in the area. Salem Bicycle Club presents us with the annual MONSTER COOKIE RIDE on April 27. This is an event ride the board has approved for club mileage. There is more information in the April QR in my article entitled MONSTER COOKIE METRIC CENTURY. However, let me encourage you to ride all these event rides. Wear club apparel such as your jersey and/or vest and SOCKS! Promote your club. Of course, when you have the club’s name plastered all over your body, we do ask you to behave yourself, and ride safely and considerately. Thank you in advance.

GOOD NEWS: our own PIONEER CENTURY® on June 7 is coming along well. Cindy Bernert-Coppola reached out to me and asked if we could work together as co-coordinators for the PIONEER. So here we are, moving confidently toward the finish line with volunteers in place, sponsors signing on, posters being hung, Zoom meetings zooming, and most importantly, riders registering to ride the PIONEER! It’s on!

Seattle to Portland (STP), July 12-13, is also in good shape with our new Finish Line Coordinator Richard Rosenberg learning the ropes, many experienced volunteers taking back their usual gigs, and others taking on roles that are new to them. Thank you all for supporting PBC in this way.

With both PIONEER and STP, it’s a team effort. We work together, support each other, solve problems together, and have fun. I know as I write this, there are only a few volunteer slots available for PIONEER, and STP is 71% filled, so look at SignUpGenius and see where you can fit in. Recruit a friend or loved one to join you, so you enjoy your volunteering even more. You get a nice T-shirt from Cascade and a voucher for food from one of the food trucks in the park. Before the event there will be a pizza party as well.

I am so relieved that our usual events have come together. Thank you all who have gotten involved in supporting your club.
