Leif Erickson – Skyline – Cornell 1/2 gravel loop

Description

From Chapman School we'll head to NW Thurman, turn left (west) and go to its far end where Leif Erickson Drive (& gravel surface) begins. We'll take Leif Erickson out to Milepost 8 then double back to Saltzman Rd and turn right (west) up to Skyline Blvd and turn left (south). After a short detour through Skyline Cemetery we'll continue on Skyline, then turn left on Thompson Rd, and left again on Cornell Rd and downhill into NW Portland. Coffee is at St Honoré Bakery, at NW Thurman & 23rd Place, near end of ride.

Notes:

> About half of this route is on gravel. It’s mostly hard-pack but does have a few loose sections - recommend using a mountain, gravel, or hybrid bike.
> Leif Erickson Drive is narrow and has many blind corners with a lot of bike & pedestrian traffic. Plan to ride single file most of the time and stay well to the right going around corners.
> Skyline Blvd has a paved, separated bike path we’ll use for part of the way.
> Cornell Rd has two tunnels and depending on traffic we may opt to take one or both of the pedestrian bypass trails along their north sides.
